The physical challenges to be overcome
- The Lower Glacier
- Has to be crossed at night while it is frozen.
- Only one member of the team has a 'torch' - the rest are travelling blind.
- The team must cross without falling into any of the crevasses that lurk in the glacier.
- Team members must be at least one metre apart to avoid creating too much weight in one location.
- Loud noises and any shouting can cause avalanche and icefall in this region.
- The Great Crevasse
- A bottomless crevasse lies at the head of the glacier.
- The team must cross it to gain access to the Upper Snowfield.
- Anyone touching the 'black of the crevasse' has fallen into the abyss.
- The Upper Snowfield
- A snow accumulation zone lies at the head of the glacier.
- Travel is slow and the snow is deep.
- Because of the altitude it is only possible for teams and individuals to make one physical movement every five breaths.
